As a
sequential course in the Kokomo Area Career Center Academy of Law,
Public Safety and Security, Introduction to Law Enforcement
is designed for students in grades 11 and 12 who have successfully
completed Introduction to Criminal Justice and are specifically
interested in a law enforcement career. In addition to classroom
instruction regarding the history of policing, police department
organizations and structures, criminal codes, case law, crime scene
investigation techniques and police ethics, students will learn and
demonstrate practical skills in arrest procedures, evidence
collection and preservation, self-defense tactics, courtroom
testimony and safety procedures. Site visits and research projects
within the community will provide students with opportunities to
observe practical applications and to explore law enforcement career
interests at the federal, state and local levels. Course content,
methodologies and evaluation procedures are designed to meet and
exceed Indiana Department of Education Standards for Career and
Technical Programs for Law Enforcement. In addition, the curriculum
is designed to satisfy academic standards for the awarding of dual
credits to students by accredited post-secondary institutions.
