On behalf of the entire Kokomo School Corporation organization, allow me to welcome you to our schools and our community. Kokomo is on the move and excitement is in the air. One does not have to look far to see these changes: new businesses throughout our community, new faces in our town, and improved parks, trails, and infrastructure that make our city better. Much like our partner, the City of Kokomo, the Kokomo School Corporation is no different. We have completely redesigned our space for learning, reimagined the programs so students are engaged, and transformed our delivery of instruction. I spoke to a high school student during the summer and she said, “I can’t wait for the school year to start. The schools are really investing in us (the students) and they really care about us.”
For the 2013-2014 school year, we continue to add new educational options for students. Bon Air Middle School has reopened as a one-to-one technology middle school. This school features interactive and modern classroom designs complemented with technology that allows students to learn in a creative and engaging environment. The Central Middle International School, Kokomo High School, Lafayette Park International Elementary School, and Sycamore International Elementary School have gained International Baccalaureate authorization, which makes them the only four IB World Schools in the region. Kokomo Schools has opened new preschools at Pettit Park Elementary and the Lafayette Park International Elementary School, and expanded our preschool at Elwood Haynes. At Kokomo High School, we now offer 18 AP classes and the IB (International Baccalaureate) program goes through grade 10. Additionally, Kokomo High School now is a one-to-one technology program for grades 9 and 10.
In addition to the investment in our curriculum and programs, our district has been investing in our facilities.Work currently is being done on classroom and office renovations at Maple Crest Middle School; auditorium and classroom renovations at Central International Middle School; a new girls’ locker room, restrooms, and a concession stand at Kokomo High School’s athletic field complex.
I continue to feel blessed to serve as Superintendent of the Kokomo School Corporation. Without a doubt, our great schools continue to improve, and I am thrilled to be able to play a small role in that process. I count myself very fortunate to be able to live and work in Kokomo. This is an amazing community!
Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a community member, I encourage you to become involved in our schools. As a student, I encourage you to take a rigorous course load with a focus on career preparation based upon your interests. I also encourage you to remain active in extra-curricular activities, clubs, and school events. As a parent, I encourage you to volunteer a tour schools and to remain highly involved in the education of your children. As a member of the greater Kokomo community, I encourage you to remain active and supportive in the education of our community’s children. I hope you will donate to worthwhile educational causes, including the Kokomo Public Schools Education Foundation, which raises money each year to provide student scholarships, teacher grants for classroom materials, and much more.
Here is wishing you a fantastic school year. I look forward to seeing you at our schools.
