Special workshop at Maple Crest schools

Expert Erik Vosteen recently conducted an early colonization and Native American technologies workshop for the 8th graders at Maple Crest Middle School and the 5th graders at Maple Crest Elementary. The workshop included flint knapping, rope making and fire making.

While demonstrating the differences in the creation and uses of these various technologies, Mr. Vosteen explained how the trade benefited and changed both the colonist culture and the Native American culture.

The Maple Crest students spent the day under the Basswood tree by the elementary playground participating in hands-on activities. According to Maple Crest teacher Becky Stoltzfus, the students were fascinated by a mink pelt that held a flint knife before they worked together to learn how to make rope. The final demonstration explained two methods of making fire.
