WELCOME from Dr. Jeff Hauswald
Superintendent of Kokomo School Corporation

On behalf of the Kokomo School Corporation, allow me to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year.

If you are enrolled currently in one of our many academic programs at Kokomo Schools, thank you for your continued support. If you are enrolling your children for the first time in Kokomo Schools, thank you for joining what we consider to be one of the finest school districts in Indiana … for that matter, in the United States. One key reason: our outstanding teachers and staff.

Your Kokomo School Corporation leaders – including Board members, administrators, and teachers – have spent many hours during my tenure studying some of the top programs and schools in the world. We believe the time is well spent because we recognize the need to provide a range of programs and options, as well as outstanding facilities for our students, parents, and patrons.

Kokomo School Corporation continues to have 1-to-1 technology for our Kindergarten through Grade 12 students. We also are proud that our district again ha expanded our preschool offerings for 3 and 4 year olds. We offer free half-day classes and co-pay full-day classes at 7 Kokomo Schools sites for Kokomo School Corporation residents.

In recent years, the seeds planted through International Baccalaureate (IB), Integrated Arts, STEM, Technology Academies, early childhood expansion, 8th grade career schools, and career education expansion are bearing academic fruit; while our facility projects, including new learning spaces, libraries, and five new and/or renovated dining facilities; give both our alumni and current students great pride. Kokomo School Corporation’s fourth group of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program candidates, as well our third group of IB Career-Related Diploma Program candidates, were members of the KHS Classs of 2019. Those IB graduates made Kokomo Schools the only district in the state of Indiana to offer IB for students, Kindergarten through Grade 12, including an IB career-related program.

I will use the Kokomo High School Class of 2019 to illustrate why I believe Kokomo School Corporation is among the finest urban school districts. Our 2019 graduates earned approximately $8.7 million in scholarships. This class includes the Coffy twins – Walker and Conner – who earned full-ride scholarships (approximately $225,000 each) to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Aslo, I received a note from 2018 graduate Aaryan Morrison again thanking Kokomo Schools for providing academic choices that have allowed her to thrive at Harvard University. Aaryan’s note said: “Kokomo Schools made my transition to Harvard nothing more than a small step in the right direction. Featured in that KHS Class of 2019 were 5 graduates who earned Super GPA honors (12.0 or above on a 12-point scale after 7 semesters). These GPAs were possible because KHS offers approximately 75 “weighted” classes, including 25 Advanced Placement courses and more than 40 IB and DP college-level courses, through its Advanced College Preparatory Program. Each school year, approximately 25 International students, who represent countries such as  China, Vietnam, Albania, Thailand, Spain, Brazil, Tajikistan, and Italy, choose to accept a KHS diploma.

Most importantly, whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a community member, I encourage you to become involved in Kokomo Schools. If you are a student, I encourage you to take a rigorous academic course load with a focus on career preparation based upon your interests. I also encourage students to remain active in extracurricular activities, clubs, and school events. If you are a member of the greater Kokomo community, I encourage you to volunteer and to be involved in the education of our community’s children.

Everyone should consider donating to worthwhile educational causes, including the Kokomo Public Schools Education Foundation, which raises money each school year to provide student scholarships, teacher enhancement grants, teacher enrichment grants for special classroom materials that enhance learning for our students, and much more! Volunteer opportunities, as well as information on how to donate to the Kokomo Education Foundation, may be found at www.kokomo schools.com.

I continue to feel blessed to serve as Superintendent of the Kokomo School Corporation, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to live and work in this amazing community of Kokomo! I wish everyone a fantastic 2019-2020 school year and look forward to seeing you at our schools.

Go Kats!
