The 5th Annual Black History Month Live Museum came alive in the Kokomo High School foyer Wednesday, February 23, 2022. This year’s Live Museum highlighted a variety of black actors and actresses throughout history. These portrayals and displays by KHS student volunteers of black historical figures were organized by Kokomo High School students; and then performed during the two lunch periods. This year, Morgan McCloud, a KHS junior, was the Live Museum student coordinator.
“Black History Month is important,” Morgan said. “When Ms. (Jenifer) Scott approached me about becoming involved with the Live Museum this year, I immediately said yes. I do not like to talk in front of people, but I knew that taking on this project would help me grow, and perhaps help me overcome that fear.”

Morgan also noted how the 31 student volunteers participating in the 2022 Live Museum were dressed as different black actors and actresses. The student volunteers each chose a character to portray, as well as a movie or TV show in which that actor or actress played a role. The students also completed research on their figure, and then created signs describing their character that included a brief synopsis of the movie or TV show.
“I came up with a list of black actors and actresses; and once the students decided who they wanted to portray, I helped them choose their outfits and props,” Morgan explained. “I had help from my two best friends, and we are
very proud of how well the Live Museum came together today.”

Morgan noted that she believed it was important to celebrate the diversity of skin tones within the black community.
“Everyone is different, and I think that is beautiful,” Morgan added. “We have students representing diversity in our Live Museum, and that is important.”
Ms. Jenifer Scott, the faculty sponsor for the Live Museum project the past four years, said she and Morgan started meeting in November 2021 to prepare for this event.

“Morgan has worked really hard to make sure that the Live Museum was a success,” Ms. Scott explained. “I might be the faculty sponsor, but nearly all of the planning and preparations are done by the students.”
