Students at Boulevard STEM Elementary School recently celebrated Dr. Seuss Day at the Kokomo Area Career Center with silly hats and career lessons.

Boulevard students donned their favorite Dr. Seuss-themed gear and trekked to their neighbors at the Kokomo Area Career Center for a day of interactive lessons on career pathways. The elementary students had the opportunity to spend time in a variety of career center classrooms, which each adopted a different Dr. Seuss theme.

Lacey Jones’s Vet Tech classroom was transformed into the Whoville Vet Clinic, where the young Boulevard scholars were offered the chance to adopt a “puppy”, identify animals based on their x-rays, and pet kittens and reptiles.

Judi Townsend’s Anatomy class utilized the book, “Inside Your Outside” in their interactive lesson. In this book, the Cat in the Hat takes Sally and Dick for a ride through the human body. Boulevard students used Parker, an augmented reality teddy bear, to learn about diagnosing medical issues. This bear allows young children to learn to cure a tummy bug and cool a fever, while also watching the bear’s heart and lungs come to life.

Paul Mikesell turned his Agriculture classroom into “The Lorax”, where he taught Boulevard students about the importance of protecting the environment, trees, and plants, while growing their own food. Students had the opportunity to plant their own truffela tree in a flower pot.

In the Auto Body classroom, Boulevard students were able to look at the underside of car, while playing with new “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” cars. In the Culinary Arts classroom, teacher Dan Adams taught students the importance of cooking and trying new foods. The Boulevard students were treated to sweet treats that looked like Green Eggs and Ham.

Boulevard students also traveled to the Whoville Hair Salon, where KACC Cosmetology teachers taught them the importance of proper hair care, and how to properly mix chemicals for hair color. The teachers gave the Boulevard students water bottles, hair brushes, rollers, combs, and hair gel to make crazy hairstyles on mannequin heads.

Students also visited the Welding classroom, Television Production classroom, and Dental classroom during their tour of the career center.

Kokomo Area Career Center Director Jonathan Schuck noted: “We love connecting young students to our programs at the Kokomo Area Career Center. Hopefully we have given the students a chance to see something at a young age that will help them build their futures.”
