KVA Attendance and Participation

As a Kokomo Virtual Academy student, your attendance is more than just logging in—it’s about active engagement in your learning path. KVA follows the Kokomo School Corporation attendance policy, requiring students to attend 180 instructional days each school year.

Daily Expectations

Every KVA student (Grades 9–12) is expected to engage in six (6) hours of instructional time per day. School personnel regularly review time spent in online learning opportunities to verify participation.

How is attendance counted?

Depending on your specific course schedule, your attendance is recorded in one of two ways:

Learning Experience

Attendance Requirement

Synchronous (Live)

Students must log in on time for their scheduled live classes. If you are not logged in at the start of class, you will not be counted as present.

Asynchronous (Edmentum)

Students must spend a minimum of two (2) hours per day working within the Edmentum platform to be counted as present.

Note: Alternative time schedules must be approved in advance by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Reporting an Absence

If a student is unable to participate in school, a parent or guardian must notify the school within 30 minutes of the start of the school day.

  • Standard Excused Absences: The first ten (10) absences of the year can be covered by a phone call, note, or doctor’s statement.

  • Extended Illness: A doctor’s statement is required for any absence lasting three (3) or more consecutive days.

  • Medical Certification: If requested, a certificate signed by an Indiana physician must be provided within six (6) days of the request.

Exempt Absences

The following specific activities are considered excused and do not count toward your 10-day limit:

  • Service as a Legislative Page or Election Day poll worker.

  • Active duty with the Indiana National Guard or Civil Air Patrol.

  • Indiana State Fair participation (up to 5 days for students in good standing).

  • Court appearances (with subpoena) or death in the immediate family.

  • Medical/Dental appointments (with documentation from the provider).

  • School-sponsored field trips.

Unexcused Absences and Truancy

All absences not designated as "Excused" are considered "Unexcused" and will be communicated to parents/guardians daily. These absences count toward the 10-day limit.

While grades are based on what a student has learned, persistent unexcused absences may lead to disciplinary action according to district policy.

*Attendance Tip for Families: Attendance doesn't always have to happen in a specific building. You are considered "in attendance" whenever you are actively participating in your guided learning experience. Stay in close communication with your KVA teachers to ensure your progress is being tracked accurately!

State Testing Attendance

The Kokomo School Corporation follows the rules and regulations for State of Indiana testing set by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). According to the IDOE, all students are required to participate in state testing.
