Dedicated School Resource Officers

In partnership with the City of Kokomo, our KSC schools have a dedicated team of Kokomo Police Department School Resource Officers(SRO).

SROs are sworn Kokomo Police Department law enforcement officers. They are carefully selected, specifically trained, and property equipped law enforcement officer with sworn authority, trained in school-based law enforcement and crisis response.

More than just law enforcement, these officers are a valued part of our school culture, building strong relationships with students, staff, and families while maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.

Communicating in a Crisis - What School Families an Expect

Safety and emergency preparedness are standard priorities across Kokomo School Corporation. Staff regularly participate in comprehensive safety training, emergency response protocols, and medical response procedures to ensure our schools remain prepared.

During any active school incident, the immediate physical safety of students and staff is our primary focus. Delivering accurate, verified updates to families follows immediately once safety measures are secured, as we know timely information is vital to our community.

Here is what families can expect regarding communication:

  • Direct Notifications via ParentSquare: During an urgent or developing situation, our primary method of communication is ParentSquare. Families will receive direct notifications via text, email, and app notifications based on their contact settings.

  • Focus on Verified Information: In rapidly evolving events, sharing accurate, confirmed facts is critical. We ask for patience while school and safety officials coordinate, as our updates will rely strictly on verified information rather than initial reports or rumors.

  • Ongoing Updates as Needed: If an incident requires extended response or changes to regular dismissal or school routines, follow-up messages will continue through ParentSquare until the situation is fully resolved.

  • Official Channels First: For updates involving the district or community-wide safety, official messages will always originate through ParentSquare and official district communications before any public releases.

Threats

When a school is notified of a threat, school staff work with local police agencies to investigate. This includes locating the source of the threat and determining the validity of the threat. Most often, students are quickly identified and the statements are determined to not be a valid threat. The situation is handled as a school discipline and, if necessary, a police matter. All threats reported to KSC staff will be investigated. Communication to parents: In these cases, parents/guardians will not be notified of the alleged threat, unless it has caused a disruption to the school day. Parents/guardians of students directly involved will receive a phone call from the school. If a threat is deemed to be a valid threat or if there is uncertainty about the validity of a threat, parents/guardians will be notified via ParentSquare communication from the school.

 

Rumors

With social media, rumors run rampant. If you see or hear of a "threat" on social media, please contact the school and/or police as soon as possible. Please do not share social media rumors on your person social media accounts, as this only makes the situation worse. KSC investigates all threats and rumors, regardless of the initial validity. Oftentimes, what is posted on social media is made up, from another part of the country or a misunderstanding of something overheard. These posts have a tendency to spread quickly and often resurface weeks after they initially appeared. Communication to parents: To minimize the spread of misinformation, KSC will neither respond nor repeat rumors. If a rumor is causing a disruption in a school building, parents may be notified of the action taken by KSC and police.
