While Commencement serves as the culminating celebration of our academic year, for many in Indiana, May is synonymous with the spirit of the Indy 500. This season, the Kokomo High School TechnoKats channeled that same high-velocity energy and technical precision during their impressive run at the Indiana State Championship.
The Challenge: Precision Under Pressure
Much like the strategy required on a professional raceway track, this year’s game was a test of both endurance and accuracy. Alliances of three robots faced off to shoot hundreds of dodgeball-sized balls into tall baskets. Success required more than just speed; it demanded a "racing line" of perfect programming and mechanical reliability to maintain consistent scoring throughout the tournament.

Inside the Pits: A Mobile Engineering Hub
In professional racing, the work done in the pits often determines the outcome on the track. The TechnoKats operated with that same intensity. Between matches, the team retreated to the "Pits"—a sophisticated, high-energy workspace equipped with an array of tools, spare components, and a dedicated charging station for power tools and batteries.

The team even utilizes an on-site 3-D printer to fabricate custom parts in real-time, allowing for immediate mechanical solutions. In a standout display of STEM application, our TechnoKats monitored the robot’s data and identified an unusual energy draw. By analyzing the power profiles, the students traced the issue to a specific wheel that required a reset. This proactive maintenance—much like a precision pit stop—ensured the robot remained at peak performance for the next round of play.
A Season of Continuous Improvement
The journey to State was a marathon of refinement. The TechnoKats treated the season as a rigorous laboratory, meticulously developing three distinct iterations of their robot. This willingness to learn from every "lap" and mechanical hurdle allowed the team to enter the State Championship as a top contender, eventually earning the honor of Captain of Alliance Number Seven.
The Wildkat Spirit
Leading a well-balanced alliance, the TechnoKats exceeded expectations with a formidable run through the tournament bracket. While the playoff journey ended unexpectedly due to a technical ruling on the field, the team’s ability to compete at the highest level remains integral part of this year's story.
Kokomo High School Principal Angela Blessing highlighted the students' growth and professional application of their skills.
“This TechnoKat team demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency and an impressive ability to pivot and improve under pressure,” Blessing said. “Seeing these students navigate three complete iterations of their robot demonstrates a deep commitment to the engineering process. We are proud of how they represented Kokomo, showing the state that our students are prepared to be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.”
The TechnoKats return from the State Championship with invaluable experience and the steady support of their mentors and the Kokomo Wildkat community. While this specific season has reached its "checkered flag," the practical skills and impressive resolve these students developed ensure they are already in the pole position for the challenges of tomorrow.
