The legacy of Lady Wildkat basketball is coming full circle! Kokomo High School is thrilled to announce that 2015 KHS graduate Gabrielle Smith has been named the 11th head coach in the program’s historic 52-year history.
A Homecoming for a Hometown Hero
Coach Smith isn’t just a new face on the sidelines; she is a proud alumna who knows exactly what it means to wear the red and blue. After a successful coaching stint with conference rival Richmond, Smith is returning to the hardwood where her journey first began.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to come back home to Kokomo and lead a program that means so much to me," said Smith. "This community helped shape who I am, so the opportunity to give back and pour into the next generation is truly special."
Leadership On and Off the Court
KHS leadership is confident that Smith is the perfect person to carry the torch for our three-time state champion program. Athletic Director Nick Sale highlighted her deep passion for the community, while Principal Angela Blessing noted that Smith’s impact will be felt far beyond the gym.
“Gabby stood out in the interview process with her basketball knowledge and her love of Lady Kats basketball,” Principal Blessing said. “She is also an outstanding teacher who will make a strong impact in the classroom.”
A Proven Winner Returns
During her own time as a Lady Wildkat player, Smith was a force to be reckoned with. She was an All-NCC performer who ranked in the top 10 in the conference for both steals and assists.
After high school, she took her talents to Indiana State University and later gained valuable coaching experience at the college level and within the North Central Conference. Now, she is ready to bring that expert knowledge back to Kokomo to develop the next era of greats.
Building a Culture of Excellence
Coach Smith has a clear vision for the future: discipline, toughness, and unity. She is committed to building a program where players are held to high standards every single day.
"We are going to be intentional about building something that lasts – on the court, in the classroom, and in the community," Smith said. "I truly believe the best is ahead for Kokomo girls basketball."
Chasing History in Season 53
The timing for this homecoming couldn’t be more exciting. As the Lady Wildkats prepare for their 53rd season this November, the program is standing on the doorstep of a massive milestone. Kokomo is currently just nine wins away from their 750th all-time victory!

Get ready, Wildkat Nation! The next chapter begins now. Let’s welcome Coach Smith home and get ready for an unforgettable season.
