Students at Kokomo High School are diligently finalizing their research and creative projects in anticipation of an evening dedicated to celebrating history, talent, and community connection. KHS is pleased to invite the community to the 2026 Black History Expo on Thursday, February 19, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
This free, family-friendly event is hosted by the KHS Bring Change to Mind Club, a national organization dedicated to building empathetic and supportive student communities. After the incredible turnout at last year’s inaugural evening event, KHS is moving into year two of this public showcase with even more momentum and heart.
A Tradition of Student Leadership
While this marks the second year the event has been held in the evening for the public, this tradition of excellence is now in its ninth year. What began in 2018 as a student-initiated "Black History Live Museum" during the school day has continued to evolve. Even when the world went remote in 2021, the program stayed strong with a virtual showcase. Last year, the event expanded into an evening Expo to better bridge the gap between the classroom and the wider Kokomo community.
"Last year showed us how much our community values these moments of connection and reflection," says KHS Principal Blessing. "Seeing our students take ownership of this Expo—transforming it from a school project into a community-wide event—reflects how much we value community connections here at Kokomo High School."
What to Expect: Art, Music, and Connection
The Expo serves as a meaningful celebration of heritage, featuring a blend of student research and creative expression. Guests should enter KHS through Door 1 to begin an interactive journey through displays that showcase student works and talents.
Highlights of the evening include:
Academic Showcases: Explore deep dives into history, research, and unique historical insights.
Original Poetry: Hear powerful voices as students perform their own written works.
Live Music: Enjoy the smooth sounds of the KHS student Jazz Ensemble and a live DJ to facilitate the evening’s atmosphere.
Visual Arts: Explore student photography and creative displays throughout the venue.
Special Feature Performance: A guest appearance by the talented students from Central Middle School.
Leveling Up the Student Experience
The growth of this event reflects the dedication of Wildkats to share their perspectives with the city they call home. KHS Teacher Nicole Parry has seen firsthand how the students have stepped up their efforts this year.
"The event has grown from a few displays and performances into a full celebration," Parry noted. "Our student leaders have been incredibly creative and focused. They have delegated tasks based on individual strengths and researched aspects of Black history that may not always be at the forefront of the conversation. When we were planning for this year, the ideas were flowing."
By utilizing this platform, the Bring Change to Mind Club has exercised critical thinking and leadership, ensuring that every display is handled with a personal touch and viewed through multiple perspectives.
